Straight Ink, No pencil Gi drawing challenge

Image
A few years ago I saw a bunch of artist trying a drawing challenge. It is based off of an artist named Kim Jung Gi who draws extremely detailed and realistic images with only ink. No pencil, no sketch and straight from memory and imagination! So, I decided to give it a go. The image you see below is my attempt at straight ink drawing. I also wanted to test my imagination and memory by drawing everything you see from memory. Of course, most of the drawing is fantasy but this was a great challenge for proportion, perspective, background, and anatomy.     It was a great way to get out of my comfort zone and test my confidence as an artist. I would highly recommend this challenge for intermediate and advance artist! I will be honest, it was very scary at first. But if you stay focused on what you are creating and have a general idea of what you want to draw then you will have more fun! You can start off simple by drawing one object or cre...

15 Birds (complete)

Image
This image has been such a monster, but I am so happy with the end result. I created this to express my discomfort with vivid color and brightness, so it's fitting that it has been a struggle to get the right colors. Prints @ society 6 http://society6.com/KatPowell/15-Birds_Print

Private Collection

Image
This is an older piece, 4 parts meant to be seen as a whole.  I was experimenting with transparent glue and watercolor that I laid over a pencil/ink drawings. The colored glue is only held in place by the glass.

Charlotte

Image
The creature, named Charlotte, is a mishmash of a Tarantula and a goat. She is owned by the young girl on her back who is a hodgepodge of a human and a fish, like a mermaid. Being only 6 months old Charlotte is still a baby but she is indeed full grown. Being a nocturnal creature she becomes more frisky as the sun sets so her owner takes her out for walks at night. And don't worry the fish that Charlotte is eating have no relation to her owner, considering the hundred of species of fish and that her owner was mutated. Decided to do an 'origin' story for Charlotte. The first time Charlotte met her owner she was laying under a bush watching her siblings play. As the runt of the litter Charlotte is cautious of larger creatures, but once she sees her mother approach the humanoid she became more confidant. Emerging from the brush Charlotte allowed the humanoid to hold her.

In the Garden

Image
Story time: The amphibian creatures have lived under the soil for eons; born, hatched, and matured in the perfect conditions. As they age and become too large for their original burrows they unleash a clutch of their own eggs and travel up to the surface. Once upon time they would stay and die in the earth, but this human family has given them reason to emerge. As the creatures calcify in the sun, transformed into empty statues, the little girl sets out food and drink for them. A ritual that her family has done for generations. The amphibian creatures spend their last moments in comfort and happiness. As they die their eyes crystallize over; reflecting the world and the kindness they knew for only a moment.

Cerebrum Celebration

Image
This picture illustrates the many manifestations a person can take. There are times were I share equally in discourse, rare times were I converse freely and openly, but too often I dare not say a word. For society, family, and even friends have taught me that it's far better to keep my mouth shut than to open up and lose everyone.

Dress you up in my Love

Image
The girls here really do love dressing up and this time they wanted something more personal. As the skin is cut and stitched up it starts to develop color and life. So far it's a perfect fit.

Skelies

Image
This is part of a series I've recently been working on. Please enjoy my little Skellies! Title: Toys for Tots   This an actual lithograph print, also this is the first in the series of my infant skeletons. This piece is a promise i'm making to myself and to any future kids i might have. Acetone again with matte. Such a cute little guy with his balloon, which is as big as his freackin head! If his bones were hollow he would fly away...... up up and away with my beautiful my beautiful ballooooon Title: Evil: Hear, Say, See.... This one is more of a mix of acetone transfer, ink drawings, and matte. Favorite part of this was drawing the eardrum. (i really want to see one in real life) Title: Go Fish Technically this is an acetone transfer. I've never done a series before but these infants were really fun to draw over and over again. I love them! Title: Sunkiss This is actually an acetone transfer w/ monotype color. Title: Ties that go ...

Run Wild (step by step)

Image
I've always been stronger at illustrating and drawing so i start with a sketch.    Then i try to focus on light source(s) and shadows. Finally i add in color and more shading. This is a very simple walk through, if i do another i will try to save more steps. http://k-el-p.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d38ww6h

Bringing home a baby Bumble Bee.... Concept idea for skeletons in balloons and an airhead. Done on a large piece of paper and then on a large transparency.  On the paper I drew up a couple of bodies that are partially fleshed out so that way their limbs are faded.  On the transparency I etched in the skeletal anatomy of the couple along with several cross-hatched lines and boxes. This was a difficult image to capture with a camera and there is still a lot of detail that was lost. Also the transparency adds some really neat shadows on the paper underneath. Playing around with 3-d and 2-d mix-matching. As you can tell the paper has been cut and bent to create a shallow dip. And onto of the paper there is dried glue that is forming a web. Like a tunnel spider.  Again the camera could not pick up the subtle details of the glue's transparency. :(  Foamboard again with ink and marker drawing.  The image above and below are the same. I found this little cardb...
